London 1948 - London 2012: Then and Now

Photo: BBC

'The Games opened on 29th July, a brilliantly sunny day'

Well one thing is the same! That was the weather report on the opening of the Olympic games in London in 1948 and looks like we will have a repeat of glorious sunshine for the event tonight!

Back in 1948 Britain was still in Austerity after WW11 (they were nicknamed The Austerity Games) therefore nothing was built especially for the Olympics or to house the athletes. In fact it was almost handed over to America for fear of the costs. Even though we are currently in recession, a reported 11 billion has been spent this time around!

The funny thing is carrier pigeons were set free and was one of the main highlights of the opening ceremony back in '48 and this years opening ceremony organised by Danny Boyle will feature sheep and other animals in a field - I wonder what the rest of the £27 million were spent on? The NHS will play a big part again in this Olympics with nurses performing a 'bed dance' with children on hospital trollies, yes you heard right! In 1948 nurses and hospital staff were recruited to sit in the arena and help fill up space for the opening ceremony!

So many aspects of the 2012 games has come under scrutiny from the logo to the outfits designed by Stella McCartney. As no doubt I'm sure things were scrutinised back in 1948!A first for something though; 2012 is the first year all of the 26 sports will have have a female equivalent, which is great but a shame it has taken so long!

Take a look below at the the change in the costumes!

Stokes Croft Markets - Bristol St Vintage at The Full Moon

Saturday was pretty crazy in Bristol! EDL Rally, Anti EDL Rally, Pride and Pride March and Food Festival and I was taking part in the Stokes Croft Markets and the Full Moon Venue!

It was a really nice market atmosphere with a mixture of food, art, textiles, clothing and craft stalls and also some lady buskers played for an hour between the rain showers! Glad i had a big green pub umbrella to keep the stock dry! That also explains the green tint to most of my pictures!

Vintage Hairstyles Reworked! Part 2 1920's-50's

So for this blog I had a go at doing more technical hairstyles from the 1920's-1950's and it wasn't easy! I found finger waving so difficult on the first attempt but i'm hoping it will get better with practise! I am not a hair stylist but it was definitely fun trying to modernise a few vintage hairstyles!

1920's Finger wave/ Marcel Wave a la Claudette Colbert

This was so difficult! I gave up in the end trying to all my whole head and opted for one finger wave at the front! I think it makes it a bit more contemporary.

1930's Looses Wave a la Jean Harlow

For this on I did a finger wave on the fringe and curled the rest with bendy rollers, then brushed it out after it dried. I think if my hair was shorter the curls would look a bit more defined! Its a bit too heavy!

1940's/50's Victory Rolls a la Betty Grable

Didn't get the light right on this one, I do have a roll on my head- it's a bit more obvious in the 2nd picture!

Yesterday I added this 1950's Handmade Green and Red Apron, and later this week i'll be adding a large amount of vintage shoes! Very exciting!

Vintage Hairstyle Reworked! Part 1 - 1960's and 1970's

This past week i've been totally engrossed in hair tutorials and looking at hair pictures from different eras! I always thought it was a bit strange to make a hair tutorial but its actually quite fascinating!
On this blog and the next i've had a go at copying and putting a modern spin on different hairstyles from the 1930's - 1970's
I'm doing it back to front as finger waving and victory rolls do need ALOT of practising!

Here's a few from the 1960's and 1970's

1960's/70's Bun a la Brigitte Bardot or Françoise Dorléac (my new favourite lady)

1960's Flick a la Jean Shrimpton

1970's Bedhead a la Patti Smith

Haha I feel like the last one is a mug shot! The next blog will be (hopefully!) working on more technical hairstyles from the 1920 through to the 1950's! I might work on some from the 1980's and 1990's too later on.
I'm really happy with the progress of Bristol St Vintage over the past 2 weeks, things are beginning to pick up and hopefully this will carry on and grow and grow! Thanks to everyone who follows us on Facebook and Twitter and most importantly to those who have bought from us already!

We are currently running a competition on our Facebook and Twitter (giving away a free vintage teacup set!) so if you haven't - head on over and get it out!
